USM-UKM COLLABORATION INNOVATING THE FIRST ORAL HEALTH CASEMIX SYSTEM IN THE WORLD
Along with an efforts to promote collaboration between researchers from various local institutions, researchers from the School of Health Sciences (PPSK), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and researchers from Chancellery Tuanku Mukhriz Hospital (HCTM) have taken steps to combine their expertise in implementing a high-impact research project to enhance the service for dental healthcare known as the Oral Health Casemix System (DG-MY-DRG®-OH). This is the first system in the world developed for dental care provider payment. The launch of the system was officiated by the Health Minister YB Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad on 7th. July 2018 in conjunction of the 2nd. International Health Financing Conference at the Chancellery Tuanku Mukhriz Hospital (HCTM), Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.
The concept of this system is to simplify the process of diagnosing patients with various complexity, by combining those patients into one group with the same diagnostic and clinical characteristics, using the same resources in the treatment provided. The medical care patients are broadly applied in the Casemix System. According to Project Head, Dr. Rosminah Mohamad, Casemix System is currently implemented at Hospital USM and HCTM, which is heavily focus of the medical care spectrum. In contrast, the spectrum of dental care is not sufficiently grouped for casemix assignment. Therefore, with the development of Oral Health Casemix System, every dental cases will be exclusively categorized for each episode or visit of the treatment given and through this grouping, dental treatment rates for each patient at USM Hospital and HCTM can be easily determined. This Oral Health System can be used not only by the public in obtaining better dental health care but also being able to benchmark the quality and quantity of resource use and cost in the treatment to the management.
