Yong Zi Qing from Nutrition programme of the School of Health Sciences was awarded with full sponsorship to participate in the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action from 3 to 4 April 2019 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

This seminar was hosted by the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Centre (ARMAC) and Association Internationale Des Etudiants En Sciences Economiques et Commerciales (AIESEC), supported by the Government of Norway, the Royal Thai Government, the Government of Ireland and the Clearing for Results Project, aiming to promote the awareness towards mines and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW).

Yong’s artwork was selected from more than 500 submissions to represent USM and Malaysia for this event. In the seminar, current issues in mine actions were discussed among experienced panels. Besides the seminar, Yong was given the opportunity to visit to the Training School for Multinational Peacekeeping Forces, Mines and ERW Clearance where demining was demonstrated. The team was also visited to the Banteay Prieb which is a vocational training centre for disabled coordinated by the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) to witness the assistance provided for the victims affected by mines and ERW.

This is an excellent platform for youths from different ASEAN countries to aware on such issues and contribute to combating the consequences of mines and ERW. It is the time for youth to raise global awareness and address the issue of mines and ERW towards achieving peace, stable and resilience world.
