Forensic Science Global Outreach (FSGo) 2019: Hong Kong

Forensic Science Global Outreach (FSGo) programme is an annual event voluntarily organised by the Forensic Science Student Association (FOSSA), USM aiming at exposing its members to international experience. For this year FSGo programme, eighteen (18) 3rd year FOSSA members led by Miss Nisa Aysha Zainuddin as the Programme Director accompanied by our two lecturers, Dr. Dzulkiflee Ismail and Dr. Wan Nur Syuhaila had flown to Hong Kong to visit the Department of Biological Sciences and Department of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong (HKU).

We safely touched down at the Hong Kong International Airport on 29th June 2019, mid-afternoon. On our first day in Hong Kong, we visited the Hong Kong Museum of History which had staged a special exhibition entitled Seventy (70) Years of the People’s Republic of China in commemoration with the 22nd anniversary of Hong Kong becoming one of the special administrative regions (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China. The exhibition had given us rare opportunity to understand and experience the colourful cultures of the Hong Kongers and most interestingly the nation evolution starting from the Chinese dynasties era, British colonisation and Japanese occupation to the present modern metropolis Hong Kong. After visiting the museum, we visited the Hong Kong Science Centre which is located just next to the museum. Later in the evening, we submerged ourselves in the hustle and bustle of “the spice harbour city”, strolling along the famous sidewalk night markets at the Temple Street and Ladies Market at Tung Choi Street, experiencing the impressive and highly efficient Hong Kong public transport network and tasting HK’s famous local bubble teas.

Academic visit to the University of Hong Kong (HKU) currently ranked 25th in the QS Global world university rankings was the epitome of this trip. At the HKU, we were welcomed by Professor Dr. V. Thiyagarajan from the Department of Biological Sciences where we spent most of our morning visiting their state-of-the art laboratories.  In the afternoon, we visited the Department of Chemistry where we were hosted by Dr. Angela Yuen Mai-Yan. At the department, we were introduced to vertical and horizontal mass spectrometers and a session with Dr. Kam-Hung Low on X-ray Diffraction machine, we had to admit was a mind-blowing one. The session at HKU finished late in the evening and although we were extremely exhausted, it did not stop us from rushing back by ferry to the Kowloon Island, the place where we had stayed during this trip to experience the Symphony of Lights show.

There’s this saying “what would life be like without fun” therefore before leaving Hong Kong, we spent our last day at the magical Hong Kong Disneyland theme park located at the Penny’s Bay, Lantau Island. Although the day at the theme park kicked off with heavy pour, all in all the time spent at the theme park was full of excitements, enjoyable and a memorable one. It had brought us back to those days when Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck and Goofy were once part of our life. We departed Hong Kong on the evening of 4th July 2019 with an awful lot of sweet memories.

This trip had taught us the actual meaning of team work, friendship and respect, on how to successfully overcoming the obstacles of communication barriers, proper planning and had also given us the opportunity to mingle with people from different nationalities. To wrap things up, this trip to Hong Kong was very meaningful to us as it had given us a once in a lifetime experience that could not be obtained in the classroom. In addition to this, although it was a fairly short trip, we have gained a sense of love for our beloved country, Malaysia and feel really proud to be Malaysian. Before we sign off, we would like to take this opportunity to express our deepest gratitude to our beloved Dean; Professor Dr. Norazmi Mohd Nor, Forensic Science Programme Chairman, Associate Professor Dr. Ahmad Fahmi Lim Abdullah, and Professor Dr. Aileen Tan Shau-Hwai, the Executive Director of APUCEN, USM for facilitating this memorable trip.
